To prove the Germans can rock better than most, check out Buzz Rodeo. What a band. Their new album, Combine, was recorded in 2 days under the surface in Stuttgard, Germany. With this quick recording, they got it right. Buzz Rodeo is Ralph Ralph-angular trebel rocket guitar attack and vocals; Daniela Schübel low-end-bass-attack; and Helge Gumpert batterie. Schübel’s bass playing reminds me of Gaye Advert from The Adverts, powerful and moving, Ralph Ralph has the singular glass-breaking sound from those riffs who just throws off, and Gumpert’s drumming is wonderful (dudes, this is the way the drums should sound. Don’t treat like they are your mother. Beat the shit out of them). And Ralph’s voice has some James Black sound to them, in your face, punk, DIY, screw yourself attitude. What a great band. This is true punk.

Slo Jazz
Buzz Rodeo to względnie nowa grupa pochodząca z Niemiec. Grają chyba niecałe 3 lata. Parę miesięcy temu byli nawet w Warsztacie i ja też tam byłem, ale ich nie widziałem, bo występ Buzz Rodeo był tak kryminalnie spóźniony, że musiałem już zmykać.
Płyta dopiero co wyszła (słucham w maju, nagrana w lutym, master w marcu 2017) więc właśnie mam okazję nadrobić zaległość. Buzz Rodeo to ciekawe trio, w którym na basie gra dziewczyna. Materiał który proponują możnaby określić jako mieszankę elementów hardcore/punk/noise/rock.
Ich muzyka jest surowa, szorstka ale też melodyjna. Często przebojowa ale nie wygładzona, jak choćby w przypadku piosenki Brompton Stone. Słucha się z przyjemnością bo granie jest bardzo rytmiczne, motoryczne, tempa na ogół średnie, jak w otwierającym Cheap Trick, a choć krzyczą to jednak nie wrzeszczą. Wprawdzie kiedy się wsłuchać to widać wyraźne wpływy Sonic Youth, No Means No czy The Fall, lecz wydaje się, że Buzz Rodeo brzmi tu całkiem po swojemu.

Razorcake
The first two tracks, "Cheap Trick" and "Jordan Walk", whether intentionally or not, help cement my conviction that Big Black has influenced this German trio of noise mongers -- the connections to those songs being Big Black's Cheap Trick Cover and its own track "Jordan, Minnesota". Strengthening my belief that the Chicago trio has helped shape what Buzz Rodeo is doing is Ralph Schaarschmidt, who is the perfect vocal double to Steve Albini. The one difference is that instead of employing a drum machine, Buzz Rodeo uses a human, offering up more expansive form of battery. As a keen Big Black fan, this is a no brainer for me, and was money well spent, despite the fact I also received a copy days before my purchase copy arrived -- Rich Cocksedge


OX-Fanzine
Nach erneutem Besetzungswechsel jetzt mit Bassistin und deutlich mehr Power unter dem Arsch als noch auf dem Debüt. Noiserock aus der Champions League, der alles hat, was einem beim Aufzählen der Größen des Genres einfällt, ob das nun JESUS LIZARD sind (nun gut, sie haben keinen Irren am Mikro), frühe SHELLAC (und alles aus dem Hause Albini), KILLDOZER, SONIC YOUTH, SWANS, GOD BULLIES oder wer auch immer. Großartiges Schlagzeug, eine führende Gitarre mit knackigen Riffs und ein solider Bassteppich. Von allen genannten und unerwähnten Bands wurden nur die besten Zutaten genommen, nie so nah an einer Referenz, dass ein eindeutig „klingt wie" passen würde. Die Stuttgarter hätten seinerzeit jedenfalls sehr gut in den AmRep-Stall gepasst und dort problemlos ganz vorne mitgemischt. Ich bin immer wieder erstaunt, wie viele unterschiedliche erstklassige Bands in den letzten Jahren aus dieser Kackstadt kommen. Was zur Welteroberung fehlt, vielleicht ein „aufgenommen von Steve Albini“? Auf der anderen Seite könnte die Platte kaum amtlicher klingen. Wenn Noiserock, dann so. Kalle Stille


Louder Than War
Louder than War’s Ioan Humphreys falls in love with his favourite new band Buzz Rodeo with the release of their album Combine.
Buzz Rodeo are yet another one of my ‘stumble upon’ from the Facebook page ‘NOISE ROCK NOW’. A regular contributor to the page is a one Ralph Schaarschmidt‎. An obvious noise rock fan, he posts a seemingly endless stream of links to acts such Melvins, No Means No, Shellac, Cows, the list could go on and on. But one of his favourite links are to his own band Buzz Rodeo. Ralph beats you into submission to listen to his beloved band and one day last month, I decided to acquiesce. I was NOT disappointed. Buzz Rodeo are a three piece band from Germany lead by Ralph and are currently on their second full length LP ‘Combine’ after the well received Sports LP released in 2015.
Cheap Trick opens the LP and is an enormous slab of angular guitar stabs and throbbing bass. It is based around one hell of a riff and with the pained vocal refrain of “cheap trick” and the guitar gymnastics, this is a lovely racket and an opener that sets the tone for the whole LP.
Jordan Walk has more of the angular riffs with the vocals high in the mix. A drum breakdown splits the track, but the ever present throbbing bass is the glue that combines. This mix carries on throughout the LP to give it an immediate and visceral feel that carries the music way beyond the possibilities without it.
Nice Guy is one of the stand out tracks and is simply pummelled into submission by the drums and THAT bass rhythm running throughout. The yelping vocals of “nice guy” just add to the confusion and hysteria produced.
As the LP progresses, the stabbing guitar riffs, pained vocals and crazy drum signatures are ever present and with Tripwire! in particular, Buzz Rodeo have an impossibly great tune that combines pregnant pauses, sudden throws of drums and complete noise freak outs.
And as the LP comes to a close, the riffs, noise and thick bass lines continue with Spinning and Rub Down. Closing track Butcher’s Knife is a noisy as fuck stop and start affair that bookmarks this LP perfectly.
Buzz Rodeo take no prisoners and have the sound, as well as the agenda, to take them far and beyond the possibilities of current noise/rock bands. Taken at face value, they may seem like the bastard son of The Jesus Lizard and Shellac, and that is fine. But in no way Buzz Rodeo is a tribute act. They have (dare I say it better?) tunes than the former and have a more accessible side than the latter!
Buzz Rodeo are full of great lyrics and vocals. Intricate and clever guitar and inventive and interesting drums signature fills and thrills.Absolutely an act to watch.

Due anni dopo Sports i Buzz Rodeo tornano con un nuovo album, che presenta qualche cambiamento all’interno della formazione ma che in termini di musica continua a viaggiare sui binari tracciati in precedenza dalla band tedesca.
L’entrata nel gruppo della bassista Daniela Schübel, in sostituzione di Gernot Schad, non cambia le carte in gioco: i Buzz Rodeo rimangono un power trio dedito al noise rock più classico che pesca tanto dai Sonic Youth quanto dagli Unsane e sembra provenire direttamente dalle produzioni anni novanta di Tim Mac. Nello specifico Combine presenta undici tracce, dai toni duri ed allo stesso tempo beffardi che parlano direttamente alle orecchie degli aficionados del noise rock più classico.
I ritmi, i riff e le scelte stilistiche dei tedeschi sono fin troppo ricorrenti, l’album saprebbe di “già sentito” se non fosse che i Buzz Rodeo all’interno delle note e delle vibrazioni riescono a far passare una sentita passione per il genere, andando a stuzzicare ed incalzare l’ascoltatore e regalandogli quaranta minuti di musica rock sincera e ben suonata. Difficile pensare ai Buzz Rodeo fuori da questi canoni, la loro musica continua ad essere un’istantanea che blocca il tempo per mostrarci il noise rock nel suo aspetto più genuino e diretto.

Violence Online
Najbardziej amerykański z niemieckich zespołów powrócił z nową płytą „Combine”. Nową, lepszą i… mniej oryginalną. Czyli w zasadzie dosadniejszą od „Sports”, może nawet mniej wymagającą. Ale przez to dużo szybciej łapiącą za gardło. Paradoks?
W ostatnich czasach zauważyłem pewną prawidłowość odnoszącą się do młodych (ok, także nieco starszych) czeladników wyświechtanej, ale wciąż kuszącej sceny noise rockowej. Otóż, w najprostszym ujęciu, im bardziej młode/nowe zespoły, korzystając z dobrodziejstw swoich pryncypałów sprzed lat, chcą wymyślić coś własnego, teoretycznie oryginalnego i lepszego, popadają w śmieszność albo wydalają przyciężkawe buły, które zamiast miażdżyć (założenie), niemiłosiernie męczą (rzeczywistość). Z drugiej strony – wykonawcy, którzy się poddają, uznając, że nic lepszego od klasyków z epoki nie wymyślą, płodzą zaskakująco dobre i wciągające płyty. Tak było z KEN mode, z niedawno opisywanym Buildings, tak jest i z BuzzRodeo.
Pozornie niemiecka załoga nie zrobiła niczego, co byłoby kompozycyjnie lepsze od „Sports”. Składniki się zgadzają, energia też, przesunięty został jedynie leciutko środek ciężkości. Z nowej fali czy może post punka w stronę bagnistego, bluesowego wyziewu. Nieco inaczej ustawiono brzmienie bębnów (mistrzostwo, życzę każdemu rockowemu zespołowi takiego pięknego dudnienia beczek…), gitarowe riffy i dysonanse śmierdzą na kilometr dziedzictwem Duane Denisona, może jedynie podejście do basu mnie zaskoczyło, bo ustawienie średniego pasma „pod gitarę” ciutkę osłabiło mięsistość brzmienia czterech strun obsługiwanych przez nową osobę w zespole, panią Danielę, choć i w tym wyczuwam po chwili przyzwyczajenia sens. Ok, jaki jest efekt? Rewelacyjny – z kompozycji odsączono niepotrzebny tłuszcz, zostawiając samą esencję. Każdy instrument gra w sumie proste, ale cholernie sugestywne partie a całość ma moc nosorożca. Muzycznie BuzzRodeo – zakładam, że całkowicie świadomie – ustawił się gdzieś w środku trójkąta wyznaczonego przez „Goat”, „Liar” i „At Action Park” (w mniejszym stopniu), co oznacza oczywiście dominację Jaszczurek. Czasami dość bezpośrednią bo przy kilku fragmentach płyty (np. „Nice Guy”) z niedowierzaniem się uśmiechnąłem, zakładam jednak, że owe „dosłowności” wynikały z zauroczenia a nie niemieckiej skłonności do kopiowania. W każdym razie – nawet jeśli nie słyszę na tej płycie ani jednego, nowego dźwięku – słucham tego materiału z wielką, niekłamaną przyjemnością. Okazuje się, że noise ma sens tylko wtedy, kiedy nie odcina się na siłę od korzeni.

Gonzo Circus
Het uit Stuttgart afkomstige trio Buzz Rodeo heeft een opvolger klaar voor hun debuut ‘Sports’. Ralph Ralph (zang, Albini-gitaar), Helge Gumpert (drums) en Daniela Schäbel (bas) zijn grote fans van het label Touch And Go, toch van wat uitkwam tijdens de jaren 1980 en 1990. Van zodra opener ‘Cheap Trick’ inzet, is dat duidelijk. Twee bands die Buzz Rodeo bij uitstek tot hun favorieten aller tijden rekent zijn Shellac en The Jesus Lizard. Inderdaad, Shellac, en heel wat minder Big Black of Rapeman. Of probeer ‘Nice Guy’, een perfecte mix van The Jesus Lizard en Shellac. Het zijn twee bands die bij elk van de tien nummers voortdurend in ons hoofd opduiken. En wat eigenlijk nog straffer is: het stoort absoluut niet. De drive van de nummers, het spelplezier, de kracht, de intensiteit waarmee het allemaal wordt gebracht is dermate sterk dat liefhebbers van noiserock alleen maar met volle teugen kunnen genieten. ‘Combine’ is bijna de plaat die Albini nooit meer al maken, gewoon, omdat hij er geen zin in heeft. Het mag al een wonder heten dat hij met Shellac eind mei een aantal concerten in onze contreien komt spelen. Buzz Rodeo is een mooi alternatief voor ieder die voornoemde bands geregeld mist, of wacht tot er ooit nog eens een nieuwe plaat komt. Want tussen de tien nummers op ‘Combine’ staat geen enkele misser. Alleen maar superieure krachtige noiserock om duimen en vingers bij af te likken. Het mag dan absoluut niet origineel zijn wat deze Duitsers doen, goed doen ze het wel.

Perte & Fracas
uste avant ce nouvel album, Buzz Rodeo a connu un changement de personnel avec le remplacement du bassiste Christian Schanz par la bassiste Daniela Schübel. Mais rien ne serait déroger le trio allemand de sa ligne de conduite. Buzz Rodeo est fondamentalement noise-rock, canal historique. C'est encore plus vrai avec Combine. Plus abrupt, plus hargneux, plus carré que Sports, Buzz Rodeo fait allégeance à l'école de Chicago, prend le sillage de Jesus Lizard, Big'n (particulièrement sur le titre d'ouverture Cheap Trick) et autres groupes où le nom d'Albini est souvent associé pour délivrer un album qui ne souffre d'aucun problème d'identité tant la qualité des compositions balaient les résistances et emportent l'adhésion.
Buzz Rodeo est une mécanique infaillible mais pas dénuée de chaleur. C'est même rempli d'une quantité invraisemblable de bonnes vibrations, d'une angular trebel rocket guitar attack sortant des trésors d'accords majeurs qui sentent l'aluminium brillant et les crocs férocement acérés. Chaque morceau recèle une accroche qui lui est propre, une mélodie sous les barbelés pénétrant finement dans la cervelle. La vie est belle quand les bouts de verres t'éclatent les orteils et que tu danses dans les angles. Combine délivre ainsi deux des plus belles – sinon les plus belles – compos du groupe depuis leurs débuts, à savoir Pride Parade et Butchers Knife. Belles dans le sens parfaitement structurées, légèrement plus complexes que la moyenne, contrastées, personnelles avec des lignes de guitares subtiles dégageant une mélodie explosant le palais une fois bien en bouche et une touche de poignant qui te fait serrer les mâchoires. Buzz Rodeo à son summum.
Mais Buzz Rodeo, c'est aussi tout un défilé de titres fulgurants, une section rythmique qui casse en deux, la caisse claire qui claque comme il se doit, la distorsion de la basse mettant en valeur le groove indéboulonnable, un son qui magnifie la nuit et des perles qui s'enfilent comme dans un rêve sans jamais céder à la facilité. Le chant du guitariste Ralph Ralph, alias Ralph Schaarschmidt, semble en plus avoir gagné en mordant et c'est tout Combine qui s'enflamme en acuité et en bonheur. Vous rajoutez une pochette cartonnée super classe, un très bel artwork œuvre de Fabrice Lavollay, un vinyle rouge et noir tachetée et Combine devient une pièce maîtresse de l'échiquier noise-rock à posséder d'urgence.

The Cauteriser
Buzz Rodeo are officially the first band that we are giving our second review to, so let’s step up our game and get super critical on their second album!
Combine is the follow up to their debut album, Sports, which I enjoyed for its more unique sound and blend of styles. Thankfully, Buzz Rodeo have retained key components to their sound, with the strong lead that the guitars take and that ultimate raw, retro edge to the music.
The one thing that stood out most to me is the doses of energy that have been injected into this album. It was something fairly absent previously, not that I felt it to be an issue. Whether it be through the performance or the writing, Combine is livelier and punchier, and is iced of with more of a punk edge delivered through the vocals.
Despite the majorant slower tempos, the drums pack some energy behind them and help keep things rolling. The bass carry most of the rhythm but are far from left in the background. As mentioned, the guitars are strong, whilst not necessarily powerful by sound, the use of panned out takes give them their unique dominance. This time round, the vocals seem to play a bigger part in adding touches of aggression and the punkier edge.

With Combine, the sound is a little less varied across the 11 tracks, but the songs all round feel generally stronger with more hooks and standout song moments. It is difficult to pull out any particular favourite or key moments, but the ones that seemed to make me check to see which song was playing most were Nice Guy and Tripwire!, mainly for the vocal chorus hooks, and that songs like Jordan Walk, well, that is one of the more memorable song titles from glancing at the track list. If you are looking for the “album epic”, Pride Parade would more the likely take that crown (one I would particularly love to see live).

Sänger und Gitarrist Ralph Schaarschmidt gibt den versierten Musikanten an den Saiten, stets in der richtigen Balance zwischen der angedeuteten Melodie und dem nach vorne drängenden Postpunk-Riff, die geballte aufgestaute Wut und die unmissverständliche Ansage in seinen kompromisslosen Textvortrag legend, irgendwo zwischen Rotten und Rollins, getragen vom wuchtig-treibenden Beat-Brett aus der Garage der Rhythmus-Abteilung Daniela Schübel und Helge Gumpert.
Wem, vielleicht auch schon länger, das Wahre und Schöne in Kombination mit einem bezwingenden, allumfänglich beglückend-begeisterndem Vortrag im Grunge und Artverwandtem in der laut abzuspielenden und -hörenden Alternativ-Rock-Musik fehlt, bitteschön, hier bei Buzz Rodeo und ganz besonders auf dem neuen Tonträger wär’s zu haben, in einem nicht zu knapp bemessenem, prallen Rundum-Glücklich-Paket. Man muss nicht nach Amiland schielen und hoffen, dass sich ab und an Bands wie die Melvins oder Qui in unseren Gefilden blicken lassen, was Vernünftiges an Tonträgern auf den Markt schmeißen oder Fugazi endlich aus dem Urlaub zurückkommen, das Gute liegt so nah.
Im Hause Kulturforum läuft derzeit mehr als nur ein Musikkonsument durch die Katakomben, der dank der neuen Buzz-Rodeo-Scheibe in entrückter Verzückung irgendwas in Richtung „Volltreffer“ und „Jahres-Highlight“ vor sich hin murmelt.

Le premier long format de Buzz Rodeo, ‘Sports‘, lui avait valu de figurer dans le top album 2015 de la rédaction. Frais, fougueux et instinctifs, les allemands s’étaient alors fait repérés comme dignes successeurs de Drive Like Jehu et Lack, tant leur musique déployait un fourmillement de trouvailles ingénieuses, dans une similitude d’énergies et de tons avec leurs aînés. ‘Combine’ se distingue cette fois ci grâce à un punk noise plus sec et enragé. Une évolution qui brouille les pistes autant qu’elle confirme la capacité du groupe à élargir son panel de compositions.

En plongeant vers une énergie plus massive et abrasive, le trio se délecte de riffs lourds et d’une voix plus enrouée qu’auparavant pour distiller sa frénésie. La quête mélodique s’estompe, sans toutefois disparaître, au profit d’une détermination nourrie de hargne et d’immédiateté. Tous les titres de l’album tiennent largement la route, même si parfois l’ombre de Shellac plane à s’y méprendre (‘Cheap Trick’, ‘Nice Guy’, ‘Next Position’), preuve que le groupe tâtonne encore dans l’affirmation de son identité propre. Mais lorsqu’il sillonne sur un chemin plus personnel (‘The Song In A’, ‘Pride Parade’, ‘Brompton Stone’, ‘Butchers Knife’), ou qu’il se fait plus binaire (‘Jordan Walk’, ‘Trip Wire !’, ‘Spinning’, ‘Rub Down’), il se lâche sans ménagements et monte en puissance en jetant de l’huile sur le feu de son explosivité.

Bien ficelé et tapageur, ‘Combine’ vient confirmer un potentiel bien présent, tant les allemands prouvent sans complexes qu’ils ont plus d’un tour dans leur sac et une farouche capacité à cogner juste. Reste à creuser une identité plus affirmée pour enfin se libérer des références auxquelles ils semblent biberonnés. Malgré ce détail qui va sans aucun doute s’estomper à force de travail et de ténacité, Buzz Rodeo relève le défi du deuxième album avec brio.

Unter all den verwunderlichen Klängen, die in den letzten Jahren aus dem stuttgarter Umfeld an die Öffentlichkeit dringen, sind Buzz Rodeo vielleicht am schwersten zu rationalisieren mit ihrem Noiserock, der klingt, als wäre er in Chicago oder Minneapolis versehentlich den falschen Flieger gestiegen. Der neue Langspieler des Trios überrascht dann auch gleich ein weiteres mal mit einem ausgesprochen erdigen, um einiges roheren Sound verglichen mit ihren bisherigen Tonkonserven. Das hat freilich seinen eigenen Charme, für sowas bin ich immer zu begeistern. Und ganz nebenbei verbirgt sich hinter dem Geschepper wie gewohnt jede Menge astreines Songmaterial, das ebenfalls einen sehr ungefilterten, direkten Eindruck hinterlässt.

Life Is Noisy
Wie auch schon auf dem ersten Album rockt die zweite Platte mit „Cheap Trick“ unkompliziert los. Das Eingangsriff ist dermaßen zwingend, dass man gar nicht anders kann als mit dem Kopf losnicken.Auf „Jordan Walk“ duellieren sich ein richtig sexy Bass und eine gehetzte Surfgitarre, angetrieben durch punktgenaue Drums. Dauernd möchte man beim Hören des Albums zur Luftgitarre greifen und imaginär auf ein Schlagzeug dreschen. Manchmal sind da diese kleinen Schlenker und Breaks, aber sonst wäre es ja kein Noise-Art-Punk, wie die Band selbst ihren Sound bezeichnet.
Insgesamt ist der Sound kompakter, irgendwie lauter, rauer und breitwandiger geworden. Der Gesang ist noch variabler als auf dem ersten Album, gebrüllt wird wenig beziehungsweise an der richtigen Stelle (höre: „Pride Parade“). Mit „Butchers Knife“, meinem persönlichen Lieblingssong vom Album, findet die Platte ein großartiges Ende, hier hört man, Leise und Laut passen gut zusammen.
