Reviews 2016/2017:

The Cauteriser

One thing immediately stood out for me with Sports; those guitars. So much so that I am getting straight to them the introduction. At times, such as the within Sound Of The Universe, the tone and reverberation sound like they belong in an old 60’s/70’s record. At others, they almost drive the entire song on their own. And the rest they just power the album’s biggest moments.

Now, Buzz Rodeo make “art rock”. This is a funny genre of sorts, as you will always find different sounding elements all over the shop, and almost always a really rough edge here and there. Prime example would the contrast between the rhythm heavy songs like The Gap and the more punk/noise rock sounding Movie Star. This could put some people off, but if like me you are seeking something more unique, this is all more than welcome.

There are definitely some vibes kicking around with the lead guitars that sounds straight out of pop/rock songs from many decades ago, which makes Sports such an intriguing listen, especially being intertwined around upbeat moments which sound very much modern day. Brick Lane is probably the best at single handedly delivering the best example of both sides.

Buzz Rodeo are easily comparable to many of the good indie bands from the 80’s and early 90’s. The range of influences are evident and very much stuck to for the root sound. The result is a very enjoyable listen for those of you after something a bit different.

Sports isn’t about being catchy or bursting with energy, but it instead offers an ever changing blend of punk, noise rock and art rock sounds and styles. If that sounds like your kind of thing, check out a couple of songs and see what you think.

call me appetite

Montagmorgen. Like a Fist in your Face.
Und nun das Ganze gleich nochmals von vorne, denn: me like noise too.

deadfrequencies

I already had a chance and privilege to review ”Victoria” 7” by Buzz Rodeo. Their style is unique blend of punk, noise, rock and couple more genres picked up on the way. They perform as a trio and they do it pretty well, asuming by their lastest release called ”Sports”. This art punk supergroup radiate a lot of energy with their extremely well played and produced rhytm section and guitar melodies which remind me a lot of something Gang Of Four would do. Seventies are back with style, but this time with a lot more ideas, improvisations, better studio recording and it sounds refreshing now at the end of the 2016. These catchy songs will easily find their place to your ears, because of flow they are bringing through their sonic attack and maybe you’ll find it dificult to pick your favorite tracks from this one, because all the tracks possess their own unique formula to get stuck in you head for a while. This will definetly be the top ten album of the year for all the fans of improvised style of punk and you’ll probably listen to this records until your turntable gets destroyed. ”Sports” is released by several record labels and it is available on LP and CD, but it’s stricly limited, so make sure to grab your own piece fast and play it to your family & friends.

Blatt Turbo

Are We Electric?, Mink Stole, Bhang Dextro и Tiger Shower Caps.

Soiled Utilities Productions

Buzz Rodeo is an Art Punk/Noise Rock Trio from Germany whose latest release “Sports” could easily fit in well on the Touch and Go label. This three piece wears its influences on its sleeves. Very familiar without being obvious. Elements of Man or Astroman, Shellac, and Arcwelder abound on “Sports”, simultaneously pointing back toward the sound of “Entertainment” era Gang of Four and yet moving forward to add something new and vital.
Sonically speaking this is a really tight record. This is apparent right from the get go. On the opener “Arkansas” the drums sound like they were recorded in a nice sized room with a descent set of overheads and some well placed pzm’s to catch the hits as they reflected off the walls. Nice and open without losing any of the definition.
The bass has a nice tight midrange tone that compliments the lows. Not always easy to do with any kind of fuzz involved, but here it’s captured nicely. As if a buzzsaw is cutting through a hard wood, like maple or oak. Listen to the tracks “Sound of the Universe” and “The Gap” and tell me you don’t hear it. Seriously.
The guitars are suitably jagged and bright, falling right into place with the rhythm section when necessary and floating atop of it or stepping aside just as deftly when required. Witness this tightrope walking on songs like “Pop”, “Movie Star”, and “Station 41”.

The album as a whole clocks in at 30 minutes and the songs mostly hover around the 3 minute mark. Each song leaves you wanting more and when the album ended I felt as if there had to be one more track. Just one more taste, as it were. Each song has its own feel without drifting so far out that you would guess it was another band. There are no stand out tracks on Sports because there are no bad tracks.

Broken Silence

Bockt wirklich sehr!

Sonic Masala

Next up we have Sports from German trio Buzz Rodeo. This is more angular, guitar dominated noise rock, upholding the muscularity and howls of The Jesus Lizard, Pissed Jeans and Shellac. They are heavily influenced by the Touch & Go/Dischord nihilistic rock, even getting their Fugazi out for closer 'Pretty Lousy Bastard'. It's a killer record - let's get these guys over to London for a show soon, yeah?

Kulturforum, Gerhard Emmer

Steaming their noise/artpunk out of Stuttgart, Germany that grants a passage to their world of ‘SPORTS’, the band that just hit our radar goes by the name of BUZZ RODEO. The main cover art is a gold embossed Olympic athlete weightlifting in a concentric sun graphic that reminds me of Hans Solo frozen in time. Taking the album art into consideration, it brings about thoughts of surmounting obstacles to break out of a mold and reach a victorious feat.
'Arkansas' opens up the eleven track powerhouse of frenzied punk to carve out your ears with a hefty cyclical beat, guttural bass rumble, guitar sirens to alert your subconscious of the nature of your surroundings. Peppered with spoken word and muddled shouts of frustration within the landscape of finding yourself encapsulated by the church the band has built up with dirty boots as the track tapers off to remind you where you stand.
The time ticking theme of getting out of ones circumstances marred by thoughts that weigh heavy on the mind by realizing the call to arms highlighted in the story of an old man on ‘Sound of the Universe’ and the pressure that builds in ‘Pop’ to recognize your sphere of powerful thought to take back control. There is a push to build a new way of thinking by clearing away the vestiges of failed ideas tested in ‘Brick Lane’ using your imaginary shopping cart to grip the handle bar until you see the whites of your knuckles to ride off in new found consciousness.
This band needs to tour through the Americas soon! So request them and pick up a copy of ‘SPORTS’, off their bandcamp page:

Buzz Rodeo Needs to be Screaming Out of Your Speakers!
One of the great things about music is how quickly we can latch on to something we hear. I tend to think of this as a musical memory. We hear a guitar chord, a bass line, a drum beat, a vocal and we almost instantaneously develop a feeling. Do we love it, hate it, understand it, does it remind us of a time period in our lives, does it excite us and on and on and on. When I first heard the opening notes of "Arkansas" off of Buzz Rodeo's debut album Sports, I knew within seconds I had found something great, something familiar yet fresh, something seemingly wriiten specifically for me. My music memory kicked in and allowed my soul to approve of what I was hearing.
Another great thing about music is how subjective it is. We all have our own tastes, likes and dislikes. I challenge you though, if after listening to Sports you don't start thinking about bands like Fugazi, Bleach era Nirvana and Sonic Youth, get back to me and explain how you don't hear it. It will be quite difficult for you to do so. Buzz Rodeo has a sound, an attitude and a song writing talent that few display these days. Yes it's recognizable to a degree (show me a piece of music that isn't) but it's also so easy to move these German rockers into a class of their own right now. They are working with influences they relate to and creating something unique for the rest of us to enjoy.
The lead track, "Arkansas" bludgeons you with a groove right from the start and never lets up. It's gradual build up and slope back down again is a great ride which sets the tone for the rest of the album. This is followed by "Home" and its desperate, angst filled chorus of "I'm coming home" and you start to realize these guys are serious about what they're doing. The pure chaos of "Elephant Rifle" is like a sonic jolt of caffeine and the album closer, "Pretty Lousy Bastard" could be an 80's new wave/punk romp that you've just rediscovered and can't stop listening to.
All in all, the 11 tracks on Sports are well worth listening to and telling your friends about. I for one think they're one of the best bands out right now and it would be a shame if others don't feel the same way!

Phelt Magazine Music

The album starts off with “Arkansas,” a Dale Crover-esque drum riff, his left foot raising up and down as he plays the “duh!duh!duh! Snap! Uh Snap!” Tom and snare trade off, which flows quite well into the verse. When the vocalist sings, that drum riff comes in like a train, but then between each punky sonnet, the guitar squeals in on a bending two note sequence. Once again, to go right back into the verse. Ending with the vocalist screaming “With Dirty Boooottts!” This song sort of makes Dirty Boots by Sonic Youth seem boring…
Speaking of Sonic Youth, next on the list, we have “Home,” which sounds like Thurston Moore just got into a drunken fist fight, and grabbed the microphone. it’s 110% Dirty. The chorus sounds like your local punk ass garage band finally finding their sound. The Drums, once again, sound exhausting and fabulous. Great production quality.

“The Sound of the Universe,” really shows the Vocalist’s German accent coming out. It almost sounds like he is letting the words echo back into his skull, mumbling the intended words, but sometimes you rather hear “the sound after youuuu is worseeee!” Haha but it sounds grand and raw, almost misspoken on purpose.
“Pop” reeks of sweat, and exhaustion, but almost on purpose. I can see them rehearsing this song, and the performance on stage being quite drastically different than the rehearsal. The power is off the stage and in your face.
Songs like “The Gap” fool you into thinking you’ve discovered their sound, but then you hear these awesome “Rather Ripped/Murray St.” Sonic Youth buildups. A mix between alternate tunings and Electro-Harmonix chorusy goodness.
“Movie Star” and “Brick Lane” begin to remind you of “At Action Park” by Shellac. The album print and press kit, it’s feeling of “only I own this album, nobody else can have it,” is only so similar to owning a Shellac Vinyl. It gives you a sense of individuality. Each album coming with its own handmade coin, and the artwork being done by the lead singer’s girlfriend. Have I said that I love the drummer yet?
“Cross Bone Bodies” has the bass and guitar playing in ¾, while the drummer continues in perfect 4/4. I dig that, it’s a rare occurrence for a ¾ riff to sound good over 4/4 drums. Sort of reminds me of the song “5/4” by Gorillaz. Not in sound, only in its drum and guitar relationship.
“Station 41” rings on beautiful harmonics in the beginning, the bass guitar keeping this song going, like heart palpitations.
“Elephant Rifle,” is almost sickeningly in perfect tempo, at first it sounds like Ike they might be speeding up some, but it’s all in your head.
And the album leaves us with “Pretty Lousy Bastard,” the bass tone reminds me of Joy Division meets Black Sabbath. This song really leaves you with the bands true tone. Everything they have left into them, is out on the canvas. But is there still some empty space to fill on that canvas?
